We just got home from a road trip to the Florida Keys. I am wiped out, still feel like I am moving and ready for another vacation. From our home in Minnesota, the Keys are 33 hours drive time. We split this up into 2 days on the way down and 3 on the way home. That is a lot of time in the car. We bought a brand new Honda Fit last October. This was the first true test for it. I still LOVE my car.
First of all, I LOVE the amount of room there is inside the car. We previously owned an Audi A4 and an Audi A6. The back seat is most definitely bigger than the A4 and rivals the A6. It is true that the Audi’s had a more luxurious interior, but the Fit was comfortable by all standards. Kiddo 1 and Kiddo 2 both hand plenty of room, even when the front passenger’s seat was reclined.
Underneath the back seat, there is enough room for things like snorkeling gear, DVD players and of course, my camera tripod. We had room for our small cooler between the kids on the floor in the back seat.
One complaint I have is that there is only one power outlet. It would be lovely if there were one in the back seat as well (to power the DVD players, etc.)
We got on average 37 mpg for the trip down and back with a high of over 40 (we had a tail wind). I can only imagine what our mileage would have been if the Fit had 6 gears instead of 5. It does get a little buzzy when going 75 (over 3500 rpms). Definitely, not intolerable, though.
Would our conversion van have been more comfortable. Certainly. Who would complain about having a bed to lay down on and take a nap. But then again, the fuel cost would have been significantly more, too.
Do I recommend the Fit? Absolutely. I love having a hatchback. I love the mileage. I love the room. The kids didn’t complain…at least not too much.
